"2012 NCTIES Grant Winner - Marty Erskine
GRANT: ""Blast Off""
Blast Off! is a unit of study planned around the theme of rocketry and rooted in the ideals of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This was a collaborative effort by Mr. Marty Erskine, AIG Specialist and Mrs. Amber Stewart, 5th Grade teacher. This project-based learning experience allowed the students at Sandy Ridge Elementary School in Stokes County to become rocket scientists! These fifth-grade students embraced an interactive approach to learning that was fun, engaging, and challenging.
Students built background knowledge through informational reading and research to learn about rocketry and to discover Newton’s Laws of Physics, as well as the concept of aerodynamics. Students then worked in cooperative learning groups to read complex directions in order to actually construct the model rockets. The culminating activity was the actual launch of the rockets.
