Analyzing and Remixing Free Digital Comics in the Secondary Classroom 

Previous research has found that resources such as comic books and graphic novels can be used to encourage reluctant readers to read. These resources are readily available, but can be costly. Some comic books, such as those that first published in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, were not copyrighted, or the copyright has expired, and can be freely used for projects. This presentation will discuss how free digital comic books can be modified using free graphical editing software to encourage students to read more, critically view messages in the text, consider historical elements, and remix to create new works.

Personalizing Learning for the Gamer Generation- Cancelled 

As schools adapt to new technologies and new possibilities, they're also adapting a new generation of students: the gamer generation.  These young millennials have grown up surrounded by games and ubiquitous media, and they bring to the classroom certain assumptions that adults in the school may not share.  In this session, we'll explore certain generational assumptions present in schools--including assumptions from your generation--and talk about the implications of those assumptions on school and technology policies. We'll close with a discussion among participants of how schools are personalizing learning for this new generation.

K-12 1:1; An Implementation Story describes the journey of Avery County Schools as we transformed visions of 1:1 computing in the Fall of 2010 for some of our students, into a 1:1 reality for all students K-12 by the Fall of 2011. Common Sense - Your ''Passport'' to Digital Citizenship 

Learn how Kimmel Farm Elementary is teaching digital citizenship with Digital Passport (digitalpassport.org), a free online learning platform for grades 3-5 that teaches and tests the basics of digital safety, etiquette, and citizenship. Developed by Common Sense Media, and aligned to ELA Common Core and NET-S, Digital Passport also aligns with the school's improvement plan for ongoing education in the ethical use of social media.
